Festival De Cannes 2012 | Chopard's Tribute To Marilyn

Chopard celebrates 15th consecutive years as official partner of the Cannes Film Festival. Once upon a time, the prestigious watch and jewellery creator teamed up with the most prominent festival of international cinema to coalesce a strong passion for art and originality, and thus a fabulous tale of creativity would ensue. It all began in 1998 when the President of the Festival asked Caroline Scheufele, Chopard’s Co-President and Artistic Director, to redesign the beloved Palme d’Or trophy. Ever since, by adorning the stars with a specially designed collection, rewarding young talents, and taking part in the festival’s major events, Chopard has become a fervent part of the world’s most glittering and glamorous movie event.

Chopard's Tribute To Marilyn

As symbols of ultimate glamour, Marilyn Monroe and Chopard were destined to cross paths. Chopard exhibit an exceptional series of 25 exclusive photographs of the star by Milton H. during the 65th Cannes Film Festival 2012. In 1953, Milton H. Greene was sent by Look magazine to Los Angeles to photograph an up and coming star by the name of Marilyn Monroe. On the first day, they started with a series of pictures. After everyone left, Milton asked very politely if Marilyn would take off her clothes and put on a black sweater coat that he had brought from New York. He also asked if he could take the bandage off her ankle, which she had sprained during the filming of “River of No Return”. Since her ankle was very painful, she couldn’t stand, so she knelt. In the initial magazine spread in 1953 there were pictures of her sitting on the floor wearing the sweater. Considered risqué at the time, one of these images of her kneeling was first published in “ Marilyn Monroe” by Norman Mailer in 1972.

The exhibit, called ‘Diamonds and Glamour: Marilyn Monroe and Chopard’, previewed in the Chopard Lounge at the Hotel Martinez throughout the Cannes Festival, before touring the world during the rest of the year.

As a tribute to Marilyn Monroe, Chopard has designed a extraordinary jewellery creation inspired by the star and which was worn by Eva Herzigova on the opening night of the 65th Cannes Film Festival.
